Abstract
The current status of migrant integration in Korea seems to be far from ideal. The human rights violations against migrants remain common in the workplace and everyday life. The public’s perception and attitudes toward migrants have changed from paternalism to apathy, and is deteriorating to the level of hatred toward certain groups. Korean adults' multicultural acceptance increased from 2010 to 2015, but has continued to decline since then. The level of social integration of migrant workers and married immigrant women, which are representative groups of migrants in Korea, is not high in both material and psychological aspects. Migrant workers have a high employment rate, but they work long hours in low-skilled, low-wage work, are exposed to non-payment or delayed payment of wages and physical and verbal violence, and their labor rights are greatly restricted. They cannot bring their families, and their opportunities to acquire permanent residency and nationality are greatly limited, so they are not subject to social integration. Marriage migrant women tend to have low employment rates, employment stability, and income due to their low age and education level, ability to understand Korean language and culture, the large age and cultural gap with their husbands, and the burden of childbirth and childcare. They are also dependent on their husbands because they need their consent when applying for permanent residency and nationality. The language and culture of their home country are not respected and they are under strong pressure to assimilate into Korean culture.

Bio
In-Jin Yoon is a professor of Sociology at Korea University and the director of the Korea University Library. He earned his Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Chicago and taught in the Asian American Studies Department at the University of California, Santa Barbara. His research interests include social psychology, international migration, immigration policy, and overseas Koreans and Korean diaspora. He is the author of On My Own: Korean Businesses and Race Relations in America, Korean Diaspora, North Korean Migrants, International Migration and Multiculturalism in Northeast Asia.

He joined the Department in 2006. His research interests relate to the political economy of development, with a regional focus on East Asia. Jens Wrona is Professor for Economic Geography and East Asia at the Mercator School of Management (MSM) and the Institute for East Asian Studies (IN-EAST) at the University of Duisburg-Essen. He is CESifo Research Network Affiliate and affiliated with the Düsseldorf Institute for Competition Economics (DICE) and the Ruhr Graduate School (RGS). As a principal investigator Wrona is part of the DFG-funded RTG 2484 – Regional Disparities & Economic Policy. He conducts theoretical and empirical research in international, regional, and labour economics using data from Japan.

Abstract
Using monthly price data from the Survey of Wholesale Markets for Fruits and Vegetables of Japan, we demonstrate that regional taste differences are an obstacle to inter-regional market integration. We propose a novel strategy for identifying the causal effect of localized tastes on bilateral market integration, we propose a novel identification strategy. We use the spatial distribution of historical dialects in Japan to measure historical-cultural proximity, which can be used as an instrument for the persistent dissimilarity in local food preferences. In accordance with the localized taste hypothesis, we find that regions which historically did not share a similar dialect/culture are characterized by persistent taste differences, explaining the lack of bilateral market integration among these regions. weniger

Abstract
A small city-state with a highly developed economy strategically situated in Southeast Asia, Singapore is a major hub for migration/mobility in the Asia-Pacific region and has one of highest non-resident-to-resident population ratios in the world. While migration research has long noted that Singapore has a bifurcated foreign labour-immigration regime favouring the highly-educated/skilled migrants, more recent research seems to suggest that even the well-educated, professional, middle-class migrants are not exempted from insecurity and precarity under Singapore’s tightening immigration regime since the late 2000s and early 2010s. This talk draws on several strands of migrant-focused research that emerged within the past decade in Singapore, specifically offering insights from published and ongoing research (including several of the author’s own projects) about the settlement and integration experiences of migrant professionals (from Chinese and Indian backgrounds), immigrant-background teachers in mainstreams schools, and immigrant parents whose children go to government schools. It is argued that a common theme characterizing the experience of these diverse “migrant middle” groups in Singapore is a sense of insecurity resulting from increasing difficulties of obtaining a permanent foothold (permanent residency/citizenship) in the country. The paper also sheds light on how feelings of uncertainty, anxiety and precarity manifest in realms such as work and children’s education for these “insecure” migrant middle in Singapore.

Talk 1: A Comparative Analysis of Shadow Education Systems: Insights from Hong Kong and Germany
Abstract
Shadow education, a metaphor for private supplementary tutoring, significantly influences educational trajectories worldwide. This presentation explores the underlying structures, cultural influences, and educational impacts of shadow education systems in Hong Kong and Germany. Drawing from our ongoing research, this presentation utilises both quantitative data and qualitative narratives to offer a comprehensive analysis of how these systems operate within different educational paradigms.
In Hong Kong, shadow education is pervasive, driven by a high-stakes exam culture and societal expectations. Conversely, Germany’s engagement with shadow education varies significantly, influenced by regional educational policies and less centralised examinations. This presentation will discuss the implications of these differences for educational equity and access, highlighting how socio-economic status influences the utilisation and effectiveness of shadow education. We will highlight the complexities and nuances of shadow education, comparing these two distinct contexts to better understand their roles in shaping educational success and social mobility.
Our findings suggest that while both systems aim to supplement mainstream education, the motivations, accessibilities, and outcomes differ markedly. These differences underscore the need for tailored educational policies that consider the unique cultural and systemic contexts of each region. The presentation will conclude with recommended strategies for policy-makers and educators to mitigate inequalities exacerbated by shadow education systems.

Talk 2: Education in East Asia and the West: The Role of Shadow Education for Educational Success and Inequality
Abstract
Families with advantaged socioeconomic status (SES) are believed to increasingly invest in shadow education (SE) to enhance their children’s school success and thereby ensure they maintain a high social status. The global rise in SE therefore points to increasing inequality in relative educational opportunities, because high SES families may significantly improve their children’s educational success at critical transition points in the education system by investing in SE. However, comparative research indicates significant cross-national differences in the functions and implications of SE. The author presents findings based on data of over 60 societies from the PISA study complemented by more detailed national panel data from the United States, Germany and Japan. Findings indicate that the implications of SE are intertwined with characteristics of education system and learning culture and deliver explanations for the oft-reported performance gap between East Asian and Western nations in international assessment tests.
