Fifth International Forum on the "New Silk Road" and Sino-European Cooperation
Panel discussion | Wednesday, December 11, 2019, 16–20 h | Mercatorhalle, CityPalais, Landfermannstr. 6, 47051 Duisburg
New Silk Road, New World Order? Regional and Global Dynamics of China’s Connectivity Initiative
China’s investment along the New Silk Road corridors has refueled old and new threat perceptions. Neorealist scholars predict a substitution of the liberal international order by a “Chinese” model of development. This debate, however, is often based on a rather superficial reading and a general misunderstanding of the drivers and triggers of China’s BRI. Bringing together leading international scholars from the fields of economics and political science, the workshop will assess the invisible dimensions of China’s BRI by opening the black box of China’s political and economic domestic system settings. It will pay special attention to the perspectives on China’s BRI from Eastern and Central Europe and also discuss potential challenges as well as cooperation opportunities for Europe in the next decades to come.
Panel 1: Geostrategic Assessment of China’s Belt and Road Initiative
Panel 2: Economic Assessment: Winners and Losers of the ‘New Silk Road’
