Former Executive Director of the IN-EAST at the University of Duisburg-Essen, 1997–2022.
Since 2023 Associate Member of the IN-EAST.
Trained as economist (University of Hohenheim, Free University of Berlin), I made my first experience in Japan with a scholarship of the Japanese Ministry of Education and the German Academic Exchange Service. I have worked at several research institutes and universities in Germany and Japan (Free University of Berlin (1982–1984), Science Center Berlin (1987), German Institute for Japanese Studies Tokyo (1989–1994), Hagen University (1994–1997)) before joining the University of Duisburg-Essen. As visiting research fellow I carried out research at the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Tokyo (1984–1986, 1988). I was invited as visiting professor at Nagoya University (2001–2002, 2014).
