Prof. Helmuth Berking will give the first workshop of the Lab “Transnational Marxloh“

Continuing the student project “Business with wedding products in Duisburg-Marxloh”, Glaucia Peres da Silva and Laurens Lauer will offer the Lab “Transnational Marxloh” in the Spring term 2018 for the master students of the Faculty for Social Sciences. Funded by the Commission for the Improvement of Teaching Quality, the Lab will support master students to employ their skills and expertise in their own empirical research related to Duisburg-Marxloh during one semester under guidance of the Lab’s coordinators as well as to broaden their knowledge through the participation in workshops. The first workshop will take place under Prof. Helmuth Berking’s guidance (TU Berlin) on May 3, 2018. Information and registration: marxloh@uni-due.de.

3rd Meeting of the DFG-Network “Artistic and creative labor. Network for the investigation of work and organizational practices in the cultural and creative economy” with Antoine Hennion in Düsseldorf

On April 26-27, 2018, participants of the DFG-Network “Artistic and creative labor. Network for the investigation of work and organizational practices in the cultural and creative economy” will meet in Düsseldorf to discuss new approaches to sociology of art and culture such as New Materialism and Valuation Studies. Antoine Hennion will be our guest. His lecture “Lessons from Music: How can a Sociologist deal with the Value of Works?” will take place on April 26 at 7 p.m. in the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf (Eiskellerstraße 1, 40213 Düsseldorf) – Hörsaal 224. Free admission.

Thanks for your support. The closing event of the student project “Business with wedding products in Duisburg-Marxloh” on April 11 was a great success!

The opening of the Soziologisches Kolloquium was awesome! More than 70 people came to see the presentation of the main results of the student project “Business with wedding products in Duisburg-Marxloh”. Colleagues and students of the Institute of Sociology, Institute of Political Sciences, Institute of Work, Skills and Training, UNIAKTIV and Center for Higher Education Development and Quality Enhancement of the University of Duisburg-Essen were present. We had also some guests: the City of Duisburg, the Society for Development Duisburg, representatives of local civil society organizations and the press. We would like to thank the university press office that published information about our event on the university’s homepage and provided some presence in the press: Rheinische Post , WAZ and NRZ.

The closing event of the student project “Business with wedding prodcuts in Duisburg-Marxloh” will open the Soziologisches Kolloquium in the Spring term 2018

On April 11, the master students, who participated on the student project “Business with wedding products in Duisburg-Marxloh” in the last two semesters, will present the main results of their research. Their presentation is entitled “Explorative Studies on a Migrant Economy” and will present the history and the emergence of the Wedding Street, the organizational structure of the firms and their client’s profile. Dr. Uwe Neumann, RWI – Leibniz Institute of Economic Research, will provide the framework to the event with the keynote-presentation “Marxloh – Urban development in the research focus”. All interested are invited to join us!

Glaucia Peres da Silva’s article Conceiving multiple markets through network analysis: evidence from the emergence of the world music market was just published in the Journal of Cultural Economy.

New release: „Productivity of music culture? Sociological critique of a concept” in book The Productivity of Music Cultures

The book Die Produktivität von Musikkulturen, edited by Holger Schwetter, Hendrik Neubauer and Dennis Mathei , was just published by Springer. Glaucia Peres da Silva wrote the chapter „Produktivität der Musikkulturen? Soziologische Kritik eines Begriffs“.

Interkultur Ruhr is our guest in the course „Cultural policy and artistic work in comparative perspective“

In January 23, 2018 Johanna-Yasirra Kluhs and Patrick Ritter, from Interkultur Ruhr, were guests in the course „Cultural policy and artistic work in comparative perspective“. As part of the course requirements, three students interviewed both cultural producers. They discussed topics related to the challenges to cultural policy concerning interculturality, the cooperation with migrants and refuges as well as the current meaning and status of art and culture.

Paper accepted for the XIX ISA World Congress of Sociology 2018

Glaucia Peres da Silva’s paper „Migrants worth less? An analysis of the role of migrant musicians in the World Music market” was accepted by the research group “RC 37 Sociology of Arts – Cultural Production, Power, and Inequality” for oral presentation. The ISA Congress 2018 will take place on July 15-21, 2018 in Toronto, Canada.

New release: “Music business research: only a field of applied economy?” in book Music business research

The book „Musikwirtschaftsforschung – Die Grundlagen einer neuen Disziplin“ was edited by Peter Tschmuck, Beate Flath and Martin Lücke was just published by Springer. Glaucia Peres da Silva wrote the chapter „Musikwirtschaftsforschung: nur ein Feld der angewandten Ökonomie“.

New release: “Migration as global Phenomenon” in CIVES-PRAXISTEST #7

In this article, Glaucia Peres da Silva and Dennis Neumann suggest a scientific approach to migration as a global phenomenon and offer a sociological analysis, concrete suggestions to begin with the discussion of the topic in high school with examples of work assignments and possible interdisciplinary approaches. In the 5th Networking Meeting of Interkultur Ruhr, “World Music 2.0” will be discussed. In this event, Glaucia Peres da Silva will moderate the discussion on “Folklore, World Music and Globalism in the Ruhr area” with Dr. Christian Esch NRW Kultur, Uri Bülbül (Katakomben-Theater), Bertram Frewer (Kulturbüro Bochum), Elke Moltrecht (Akademie der Künste der Welt) und Claudia Saerbeck (Ringlokschuppen Ruhr).

Moderation in Momentum 17 in Hallstatt

Together with Georg Hubmann, Jahoda Bauer Institute, Glaucia Peres da Silva will moderate the Track #10: Diversity: A value in itself? in Momentum Congress 17 on Oct 19th-20th 2017 in Hallstatt, Austria.

The Research project “One world of diversity? Musicians in complex tensions of the global order” will be funded

The Program for the Promotion of excellent young scholars of the University Duisburg-Essen will fund Glaucia Peres da Silva’s research project “One world of diversity? Musicians in complex tensions of the global order”. This project is an explorative research on the negotiations and coordination of homogenizing tendencies and possibilities of diversity in transnational spaces using the example of the world music market.
