The EFL Education team participated in the 56th IATEFL conference (17-21 April 2023)
At this year's IATEFL conference in Harrogate, our team was proud to represent the Department of EFL Education of the University of Duisburg-Essen.
At this year's 56th IATEFL conference in Harrogate, our team was proud to represent the Department of EFL Education of the University of Duisburg-Essen – and to contribute to developing the ELT world forward with a concern for diversity, inclusion, criticality and cognitive activation. We all enjoyed being engaged in talks, plenaries, discussions, and joint critical thinking.
A big word of respect for our first-time presenters Hanna Lena Hertzel on "Decolonizing ELT Materials: Challenging processes of othering and Western supremacy", and Joel Guttke on "Improving teaching quality in primary ELT by increasing cognitive activation" - both were part of showcase days of IATEFL SIGs, too.
Dr. Katja Heim explored "How does an inclusive spirit materialize in ELT?" in her talk, and Prof. Dr. Thorsten Merse presented on "Diversifying ELT: Future directions for LGBTIQ+
inclusion". Albert Biel could use the conference to connect with researchers working in the fields of diversity and social justice education.
The team is looking forward to next year’s IATEFL conference in Brighton!
