TiLO wins international recognition and Best Paper Award at US-American flagship conference

A paper co-authored by Cyril Alias, Cagdas Özgür and Prof. Dr.-Ing. Bernd Noche, all with Dept. of Transport Systems and Logistics, University of Duisburg-Essen, and Mr. Qingjin Yang, founder and CEO of Dalian Qinteng Technology Co. Ltd., entitled “A System of Multi-Sensor Fusion for Activity Monitoring of Industrial Trucks in Logistics Warehouses” was awarded the “ASME Robert E. Fulton Systems Engineering, Information and Knowledge Management 2015 Best Paper Award”.

The logistics researchers from Duisburg received the award as part of the annual flagship conference of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the ASME 2015 International Design & Engineering Technical Conferences & Computers and Information in Engineering Conference (IDETC/CIE). The IDETC/CIE conferences are considered to be the largest and most renowned conference for mechanical engineering of the world and took place in Boston (MA), U.S.A., from 2 to 5 August 2015.

By winning this year‘s award, the University of Duisburg-Essen stands in a tradition of prestigious research institutions like Georgia Institute of Technology, Purdue University, University of Southampton, Luleå University of Technology and Texas A&M University.

In the publication “A System of Multi-Sensor Fusion for Activity Monitoring of Industrial Trucks in Logistics Warehouses”, the opportunities of fusing different sensors on forklifts and other industrial trucks in warehouses are analyzed in order to obtain relevant process and status information, such as acceleration, speed, temperatures and occupation status. With the technical concept, logistics managers become independent of the costly solutions of the large truck vendors and are enabled to retrofit older fleets without massive investments.
