Daniel Erni wurde 1961 in Lugano, Schweiz, geboren. Er erwarb 1986 den Titel eines El.-Ing. HTL an der Hochschule für Technik Rapperswil (HSR) und 1990 den Titel eines Dipl. El.-Ing. an der ETH Zürich, beide in Elektrotechnik. Seit 1990 arbeitet er am Laboratorium für Elektromagnetische Felder und Mikrowellenelektronik der ETH Zürich auf den Gebieten der nichtlinearen Wellenausbreitung, der Laserdiodenmodellierung (mehrteilige DFB- und DBR-Laser, VCSELs), der computergestützten Elektromagnetik/Computational Optics und des Entwurfs nichtperiodischer optischer Wellenleitergitter, z.B. mit Hilfe evolutionärer Algorithmen. Er promovierte 1996 über die Untersuchung nichtperiodischer Wellenleitergitter und nichtperiodischer gekoppelter Hohlraumlaser-Konzepte. Seine aktuelle Forschung umfasst fortschrittliche Datenübertragungsschemata in optischen Verbindungen auf Boardebene, wie z. B. optische MIMO-Systeme sowie optische On-Chip-Verbindungen. Letzteres ist Teil eines weiteren Forschungsschwerpunkts, der die Bereiche ultra-dichte integrierte Optik, Nanophotonik, Plasmonik und Quantenoptik umfasst. Auf der Systemebene hat Dr. Erni Pionierarbeit bei der Einführung der numerischen Strukturoptimierung in das Design integrierter optischer Geräte geleistet. Im Jahr 2001 wurde er von der Applied Computational Electromagnetics Society mit dem 2000 Outstanding Journal Paper Award für einen Beitrag über die Anwendung evolutionärer Optimierungsalgorithmen in der Computeroptik ausgezeichnet. Weitere Forschungsinteressen sind Wissenschafts- und Technologiestudien (STS) sowie Wissenschaftsgeschichte und -philosophie mit einem besonderen Schwerpunkt auf der Erkenntnistheorie der Ingenieurwissenschaften. Von 1995-2006 war Dr. Erni der Gründer und Leiter der Communication Photonics Group an der ETH Zürich. Seit Okt. 2006 ist er ordentlicher Professor für Allgemeine und Theoretische Elektrotechnik an der Universität Duisburg-Essen, Deutschland. Er ist Fellow der Electromagnetics Academy und assoziiertes Mitglied des Schweizerischen Elektromagnetik-Forschungszentrums (serec), sowie Mitglied der Schweizerischen Physikalischen Gesellschaft (SPS), der Deutschen Physikalischen Gesellschaft (DPG), der Optical Society of America (OSA) und des IEEE.
