One of the defining characteristics of the contemporary moment is the increasing division and polarisation between different social groups in many European countries (but also in other world regional contexts) regarding religious involvement in political life, especially regarding socio-moral issues, war, migration, and more. Against this background, this course focuses on introducing students to the dynamics of religious influences on politics (and vice versa) in European societies and beyond. What are the different forms that religious influence in politics takes? What are the main drivers of religiously-inflected politics? What consequences does this have for politics and society? Special emphasis will be placed on acquainting students with the theoretical and empirical literature and understanding this topic within an international comparative framework.
