Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Elsa Andrea Kirchner ist seit 2021 Professorin der Universität Duisburg-Essen und leitet dort das Fachgebiet "Systeme der Medizintechnik" an der Fakultät für Ingenieurswissenschaften. Zudem kooperiert sie mit dem Deutschen Forschungszentrum für Künstliche Intelligenz und leitet am Robotics Innovation Center in Bremen das Team „Intelligent Healthcare Systems“. Hier hat sie über viele Jahre verschiedene Teams in den Bereichen Mensch-Maschine-Interaktion und Maschinelles Lernen geleitet.
Ausgezeichnet mit dem Förderpreis der "Familie Klee" Stiftung legte ein Forschungsaufenthalt am "Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences", MIT in Boston, USA, nach Ihrem Studium der Biologie, das Fundamt Ihrer stark interdisziplinären Forschung. Anschließend folgte Ihre Promotion in der Informatik, die als eine der besten Dissertation 2014 von der Gesellschaft für Informatik ausgezeichnet wurde.
Im Sinne des Transfers von Forschung und Entwicklung ist sie zudem Gründungsmitglied des 2020 gegründeten und durch das BMWi geförderten Netzwerks "Space2Health" des DLR Raumfahrtmanagements. Von 2018 bis August 2022 war sie Mitglied der deutschen "Plattform für Künstliche Intelligenz" in der Arbeitsgruppe 6: "Gesundheitswesen, Medizintechnik, Pflege". Seit September 2022 hat sie hier die Co-Leitung der AG 7 „Lernfähige Robotik Systeme“ übernommen. Seit April 2023 ist sie Mitglied im Rat für Technologische Souveränität des Bundesministeriums für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF).
