Location
The University of Duisburg-Essen is located in the middle of a region with the largest number of educational institutions per square kilometre in Europe. About 39,000 students are enrolled at the university; with its 3,400 academic and non-academic staff, it is one of the most important employers in the Ruhr region. The university is the youngest in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia and belongs to the ten largest universities in Germany.
The Ruhr area with its multitude of museums, cultural venues and sports facilities offers an incomparable cultural and living experience. It is not without reason that in 2010 the city of Essen and the Ruhr area became the “European Capital of Culture”. Thanks to the close crosslinking of cities every metropolis of the region can be reached within a short amount of time.
Institute of Political Science
The Institute of Political Science at the University Duisburg-Essen is one of the largest in Germany, working in close cooperation with the INEF (Institute for Development and Peace), the Institute of East Asian Studies, the Rhine-Ruhr Institute for Social Research and Policy Consulting and the NRW School of Governance.
The Institutes’ research is oriented towards the focus “Governance and Legitimacy in a Globalised World”, structured into three main research areas:
- Global Governance
- Governance and Government in World Regions
- Democratic Governance
Course Programme
According to the Bologna Process the curriculum was realigned into a Bachelor and Masters program in 2006. At present the Institute offers a Bachelor degree program in Political sciences, a Master degree program in International relations and Development Policy, a Master degree program in Public Management, Public Administration and Public Policies, an English-Language Master degree program in Development and Governance, and a Master degree program in Theory and Comparative Studies of Political Systems in Transition. Please note that except for the MA program in Development and Governance, most of the courses at the Institute of Political Science are held in German. However, the Institute of Political Science offers some courses in English language each semester in its BA and MA programs.
In order to be able to offer international students a number of classes in English we are cooperating with the Faculty of Social Science of the Ruhr-University Bochum. Students can choose classes from any university that is part of the University Alliance Ruhr (UAR).
