Thermal Process Engineering Duisburg - Profile
Welcome to the website of the Chair of Thermal Process Engineering at University Duisburg-Essen.
The Chair of Thermal Process Engineering at University Duisburg-Essen
was established in July 2007 in line with the fusion of the universities Duisburg and Essen. It is closely linked with Institut für Energie- und Umwelttechnik IUTA e. V. and Johannes-Rau-Forschungsgemeinschaft JRF e.V.. Prof. Bathen is chairman of JRF and - as holder of the Chair of Thermal Process Engineering - also scientific director of IUTA e.V., which is an affiliated institute at University of Duisburg-Essen.
Teaching
In the early stages of study (Bachelor) we teach the general principles of process engineering. In the higher semesters (Bachelor and Master), we deepen the basics through lectures in thermal process engineering, process and plant technology, adsorption, process simulation and environmental technology. A complete list of our courses can be found under TEACHING.
Research
We focus on gas and liquid phase adsorption. The field of research ranges from characterization of adsorbents through adsorption thermodynamics and kinetics to industrial adsorption processes. Recent examples are the development of a novel apparatus for adsorbent characterization, processes for adsorptive cleaning of natural gas, the elucidation of surface chemistry of activated carbons, adsorptive removal of inhalation anaesthetics from hospital waste air, adsorptive removal of mercury from discontinuous processes and the development of cryogenic adsorption processes.
Our projects are mainly financed by Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft DFG and companies from the fields of chemical industry and plant engineering. Besides, projects financed by Arbeitsgemeinschaft industrieller Forschungsvereinigungen AiF e.V. are realized in close cooperation with IUTA e. V.. The Chair is networked inside and outside University Duisburg-Essen, for example with the research centres of Nanointegration (CeNIDE) and Water and Environmental Research (ZWU).
Detailed information on our expertise, projects and experimental equipment is available under RESEARCH, a list of recent publications under PUBLICATIONS.
