1 x Postdoctoral Researcher + 2 x 0.65 PhD Researchers as part of the ERC project "Atlantic Exiles: Refugees and Revolution in the Atlantic World, 1770s–1820s"

The research project "Atlantic Exiles: Refugees and Revolution in the Atlantic World, 1770s–1820s" invites applications for one postdoctoral position (TV-L E13, 100%) and two PhD Positions (TV-L E13, 65%) to join the research team on April 1, 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter. The positions are offered for the duration of three years, with an option of extending for an additional year after a positive interim evaluation (3+1 years). The research project is funded by an ERC Starting Grant, directed by Professor Jan C. Jansen, and hosted by the University Duisburg-Essen.

"Atlantic Exiles" explores comparatively the large-scale refugee movements set off by the revolutions in North and South America, France, and Haiti. Based on case studies from the Caribbean and the American continent, the project sets out to show that political migrants and refugee movements were at the very core of major transformations that the Atlantic world underwent during these decades. The project recasts the Caribbean as one of the world's major receiving and transit region for refugees during this period, and it provides the first systematic combination of Atlantic history with the nascent research field of refugee history. In addition, it sets the findings from the Atlantic world into the context of the global history context of involuntary migrations. The project includes four sub-projects carried out by the PI, one Postdoc and two doctoral researchers. Each team member will work on one of three regional case studies, focusing on Kingston and the British Empire (sub-project 1), Havana and the Spanish Empire (sub-project 2), and Philadelphia and the early United States (sub-project 3), respectively. For more information on the project, its lines of inquiry and sub-projects, visit www.atlantic-exiles.eu.
