Prof. Dr. Kornelia Freitag
Kornelia Freitag is Chair of American Studies and Vice-Rector for Academic and International Affairs at Ruhr University Bochum. Her research interests are US literary history and poetry as well as literary and cultural theory.
Kornelia Freitag concluded her graduate studies with a teaching diploma for English and Russian at the University of Potsdam, where she received her Ph.D. in 1985 and her post-doctoral degree in 2001. Before accepting the chair at Ruhr University Bochum in 2002, she taught US literature as Assistant Professor at the University of Potsdam. As Associate and Visiting Scholar, she spent extended periods of time at the Institute for Research on Women and Gender at Stanford University and at the English Department of the University of Washington, Seattle.
She has published on topics ranging from the poetry of Stephen Crane to experimental women writers to Asian American poetry. In terms of urban studies, her main interests are the representation of the city in US media and the ways in which US city scripts influence German ideas of the city and its scripting.
