Area of Research
During most viral infections, the initial immune response is characterized by the induction of type I interferon (IFN). IFN belongs to a gene family that includes up to 13 different IFN-α subtypes and IFN-β. These interferons all exhibit different biological activities such as antiviral, anti-proliferative and immunomodulatory properties. After their induction, all interferons bind to the same receptor, resulting in the expression of a variety of IFN-stimulated genes that encode antiviral proteins that directly inhibit viral replication as well as modulate immune cell function. Therefore, induction of type I IFN is a powerful tool to combat viral infections. Many viruses have found ways to evade the IFN response. Therefore, the therapeutic administration of exogenous type I IFN should have great potential for future immunotherapies against viral infections. The working group is mainly interested in the different antiviral and immunomodulatory properties of all human and murine IFN-α subtypes in acute and chronic viral infections. Particular attention is paid to the induction of the various subtypes, their regulation and their different biological properties, especially the modulation of immune responses.
