Career Paths for Students of Dual Study Programmes. A Study of the Whereabouts of Dual Study Graduates
Objective and Tasks
The number of dual study programmes in Germany has surged in recent years. From the young people's point of view, they offer the opportunity of a practical and career-oriented educational path. For universities, especially universities of applied sciences (state and private) and vocational schools, they are part of the development of new courses. For companies, they are an instrument for securing the next generation of skilled workers. Against this background it is interesting to understand how dual students enter the labour market and how they integrate into the companies.
This study focuses on specific employment and career paths of graduates of dual study programmes. The question is raised as to the significance of dual study programmes in the personnel policies of the participating companies in competition with traditional training paths such as university studies and dual training with supplementary advanced training.
The research findings will be used to describe the transition from dual study programmes to employment, by carrying out a study on individuals’ subsequent career paths. Furthermore, they will serve as a starting point for determining the role of the social partners in this process in order to develop a concept for representing the interests of dual students at company and intercompany level.
The focus of the study is on four fields of analysis:
- Industrial relations during the dual study programmes
- Transition from dual studies to regular employment
- Career paths for graduates of dual study programmes in companies
- Function of the company-based interest representation bodies in this transition process
Looking at the socio-political context as well as the debates on the development of new forms of education, especially dual study programmes, we can formulate the following hypotheses for our study:
- The transition process from study/training to work is more successful for dual students than for regular trainees or students.
- With the increasing number of graduates of dual courses of study, personnel managers have developed specific career paths in their companies for these graduates.
- In the medium term, this development will lead to cut-throat competition at the middle management level and to competitive situations of dual graduates with classic Bachelor's degrees and those from dual vocational training with subsequent advanced training.
- The transition process from the dual system of study to the workplace is, similar to these courses of study themselves, not very standardized and therefore highly inconsistent. It is characterized by individual negotiation processes of the actors involved with regard to contractual commitments, transfer practices, fields of employment and career paths.
- In this context, the company-based interest groups play a central role. They have the opportunity and responsibility to shape this process. Specifically, this includes collective bargaining conditions, selection and hiring criteria, career and personnel planning, contract structures and quality-related features of the company-based part of dual study programmes with regard to a successful transition to the initial phase of employment.
Procedure
In order to answer the research questions outlined above, a mix of quantitative and qualitative elements makes sense in order to empirically open up the hitherto little-researched field from different perspectives and with differently applied instruments. Initially, the research interest will focus on the whereabouts of dual students after completion of their studies. To this end, a nationwide full survey of dual students (Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees) is planned by means of an online survey in two waves, with a first wave shortly before completion of their studies and a second wave one and a half years later, i.e. after starting work.
In addition to the question as to whether dual study programmes will remain, the research interest focuses on the relevance of these programmes for the construction of company career paths and personnel strategies as well as the resulting cut-throat competition between different training paths. The perspective of the relevant actors at company level is of interest here, both on the part of personnel and training managers and on the part of other company interest groups. In light of the current state of research, an explorative approach in the form of 20 in-company case studies will be chosen. The company case studies are also selected nationwide, in each case according to the distribution of dual study programmes in the federal states, according to subject groups offered and the providers. The focus of interest is on the experiences and objectives of the players in the companies. The aim is to interview experts with representatives of both the company and the workforce in order to obtain as comprehensive a picture as possible of company reality from different perspectives and interests.
