Perspectives of a socio-technical design of work and organization
The importance of an integrated design of work, organization, and technology can hardly be overestimated for the current digitalization processes in the world of work. Against this background, a scientific stocktaking and assessment of the currently developed or available practical concepts, tools and procedures that support such an integrated design is necessary.
Based on an initial classification and appraisal of contemporary concepts of socio-technical system design (STS), the objective of the project is to analyze and evaluate the further development and the options and limits for action of these approaches for digitalization processes in and between companies. Furthermore, it will support discussion and critical communication of these concepts. The project focus is on the performance of socio-technical concepts for practical design as well as on the evaluation of experiences from an integrated design practice aiming at the further development of these concepts.
In order to answer these questions, the interdisciplinary exchange with the different traditions of discussion in Scandinavia and in the Anglo-Saxon world, where there are active STS communities in research and consulting, will be fostered. The prerequisites and conditions in labour policy for transferring or adapting current STS design approaches to local conditions in companies will be examined. The project will analyze the contribution of such concepts to a sustainable design of work and organization. The experiences available will be introduced into the German discussion on work design. A more intense networking of German-speaking STS actors with the international STS community is intended.
