The department of Eukaryotic Microbiology is currently being established at the Faculty of Biology and part of the university’s main area of water research. There is close cooperation with the Centre for Water and Environmental Research and the Water Graduate School. The department focuses on the ecology, diversity, systematics, and evolution of parasitic, eukaryotic microorganisms (protists), such as the Apicomplexa.

Your main tasks
You will take on research tasks in the area of protist symbiosis/parasitism research, mainly in aquatic systems. The main foci here are on:
- Systematics, molecular phylogeny (including omics data), biodiversity, and evolutionary ecology of the Apicomplexa, especially the gregarine Apicomplexa, or other protists of interest
- Development of cell cultures for gregarine apicomplexans
- Investigation of protist-host relationships and interactions
- Research on the diversity of parasitic and symbiotic protists in various environments
- Analysis of parasitic protist communities under different stress scenarios
- Presenting your research results at international conferences and in relevant scientific journals
As part of the employment, you will be given time to develop your academic qualifications.
As a postdoc, you will be given significant autonomy and will help develop future research areas (development of your own project ideas and proposals).
You will also be involved in teaching and administrative tasks.
Your profile
- You have successfully completed a PhD in biology, microbiology, evolutionary biology, or a related field.
- You are interested in and have scientific experience in ecology and systematics with a focus on (parasitic) protists.
- Familiarity with molecular biological and microscopic methods is necessary.
- Knowledge in cell culturing techniques is advantageous.
- Desirable are an affinity for fieldwork, as well as data analysis/bioinformatics, including omics-data.
- Knowledge of statistical methods, teamwork skills, and solid communication skills in English are expected.
- It is advantageous if you have experience handling parasitic protists (e.g., Apicomplexa).
