Science is built upon reliable findings, yet many results fail to replicate. A growing field of ‘meta-science’ studies the inner workings of academia, to explore how it can be improved. We offer a 3-year post-doc position to study the impact of proxy-based scientific evaluation and reward systems on the quality of science in the context of the interdisciplinary project “The evolution of scientific practice – from simulation to experimentation” funded by VW foundation.

The position is hosted by the Institute for Socio-Economics at University Duisburg-Essen, which aims for integrated perspective on socio-economic provisioning system to better understand and address contemporary social challenges.

Your main tasks

  • participation in the interdisciplinary project “The evolution of scientific practice – from simulation to experimentation” in close collaboration with our project partner in Bonn
  • designing both computational simulations and real-world behavioral experiments within a combined overarching framework of “proxy-based competition”.
  • research and publication activity in the area of Meta-science, Agent-Based Modelling, Socio-Economics, Complexity Economics or Econophysics
  • participation in the theoretical and empirical research agenda of the Institute for Socio-Economics.
  • the position will offer the possibility of scientific research and qualification

Your profile

  • interest in meta-science, philosophy of science, social studies of science and related research areas
  • experience with inter- and transdisciplinary research
  • successfully completed PhD in quantitative/computational subject (mathematics, economics, statistics, computer science, theoretical biology, physics or comparable)
  • experience or skills in one (or more) of the following areas: Mathematical/Computational Modelling, Socio-Economics, Complexity/Evolutionary Economics, Ecological Economics, Social Studies of Science
  • strong coding skills related to simulation and data analysis (preferably R and Python)
  • very good command of English and/or German
  • ability to work independently and reliably
  • good communication and team work skills, high motivation
  • scientific publications
