Research Assistant (f/m/d, No. 385-24)
EG 13 TV-L

The work of the Mechanics department focuses on theoretical and computer-orientated mechanics. This job advertisement is associated with the DFG project “Experimental and numerical modeling and analysis of microstructural residual stresses in hot bulk forming parts under specific cooling”.

Start of employment

as soon as possible

Duration of employment

36 months (with option to extend by 24 months)

Working time

19 hrs. and 55 min. - 39 hrs. and 50 min. (50-100%)

Your main tasks

In formed metallic components, the avoidance or minimization of residual stresses has so far been the main objective, in order to improve service life and manufacturability. In contrast, the targeted use of forming-induced residual stresses to increase the fatigue strength, for example, has hardly been considered. To improve component properties, the focus of this project is on the analysis and targeted modification of residual stresses in hot bulk forming components. Here, the key aspect is the numerical and experimental consideration of the specifically adapted process control in order to capture the influences of various process parameters on the distribution and stability of residual stresses. The project is a joined collaboration between the Institut of Mechanics (UDE) and the Institute of Forming Technology and Machines at the Leibniz Universität Hannover.

  • You prepare courses in German and English and conduct them in the B.Sc. & M.Sc. Civil Engineering and M.Sc. ISE Computational Mechanics degree programmes.
  • You take on research tasks in the project and work out the planned work objectives of the project.
  • You will carry out investigations, evaluations and analyses of the results beforehand.
  • You collaborate in the preparation of scientific publications.
  • You participate in national and international conferences and present the results of your work.
  • You will supervise student theses.
  • You will take on organisational tasks at the chair.

Your profile

  • Above-average university degree in an engineering degree program (e.g. civil engineering, mechanical engineering, aerospace, computational mechanics) of at least 8 semesters standard period of study.
  • In-depth knowledge of continuum mechanics / material modelling and numerical methods in mechanics (such as the finite element method) is required.
  • In-depth knowledge in the field of coupled multi-field problems (thermo-mechanical) and microstructural phase-transformation of materials is desirable.
  • Experience and basic knowledge in the use of the program systems FEAP and/or AceGen/AceFEM are desirable.
  • Very good knowledge of English (C1) is necessary, Good knowledge of German (B2) is necessary.

Within the framework of the activity, the opportunity for further scientific qualification is offered.
