Your main tasks

We are seeking an outstanding individual who will represent the theoretical foundations and applications of verification techniques in research and teaching. The successful candidate will be distinguished by excellent, internationally recognized work in the development and application of automated proof methods for the correctness and reliability of complex systems. Their expertise and focus areas lie in one or more of the following fields:

  • model checking
  • abstract interpretation
  • solvers and theorem provers
  • verification with or for machine learning
  • model-based analysis and synthesis of software or hardware

The professorship is affiliated with the newly established Faculty of Computer Science, Department of Core Informatics. The holder of this position will actively participate in establishing and maintaining connections both within the department and with other departments of the faculty through interdisciplinary research approaches. They will be involved in teaching by offering basic and advanced classes in the faculty’s bachelor’s and master’s degree programmes, primarily in Applied Computer Science, Software Engineering, and Cyber Physical Systems. In addition to lectures and seminars, the teaching to be provided also includes practice-oriented formats such as student projects.

We expect the successful candidate to have published papers in leading peer-reviewed venues and have experience in conducting projects for which they have acquired external funding from competitive schemes themself, preferably projects funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) or equivalent, as appropriate to the advertised position.

The University of Duisburg-Essen places particular emphasis on teaching quality. Therefore, candidates must outline their didactic concepts, also taking the profile of the University of Duisburg-Essen into consideration.

Criteria for appointment are based on Section 36 of the NRW Higher Education Act (Hochschulgesetz NRW; HG). According to these provisions, candidates must possess a university degree and a particular aptitude for research work, which can generally be demonstrated by outstanding results in doctoral studies in a relevant field.
