The ZIM with its 117 employees is the central service facility for IT, media and learning technologies. It operates the data centre, server and storage infrastructures as well as the entire network and is responsible for the university's lecture hall IT.

The division eScience operates the central high-performance clusters magnitUDE and amplitUDE at the UDE and supports users in setting up, porting and further developing their scientific applications and simulation methods. Individual consultations as well as comprehensive training courses and workshops are offered for this purpose. At the same time, the team is involved in the North Rhine-Westphalian Competence Network for High Performance Computing (hpc.nrw) and is therefore in close dialogue and cooperation with all HPC locations in NRW.

Das ZIM mit seinen 117 Mitarbeitenden ist die zentrale Serviceeinrichtung für IT, Medien und Lerntechnologien. Es betreibt die Rechenzentrums-, Server- und Speicherinfrastrukturen sowie das gesamte Netzwerk und ist für die Hörsaal-IT der Universität zuständig.

Der Bereich eScience betreibt die zentralen Hochleistungscluster magnitUDE und amplitUDE an der UDE und unterstützt die Nutzer bei der Einrichtung, Portierung und Weiterentwicklung ihrer wissenschaftlichen Anwendungen und Simulationsverfahren. Dazu werden sowohl individuelle Beratungen als auch umfangreiche Schulungen und Workshops angeboten. Gleichzeitig engagiert sich das Team im nordrhein-westfälischen Kompetenznetzwerk für High Performance Computing (hpc.nrw) und steht damit in engem Dialog und Kooperation mit allen HPC-Standorten in NRW.

Your main tasks

• You work independently on the administration and maintenance of software and hardware of HPC-orientated cluster computer systems (CPU, GPU), as well as general Linux server systems together with the HPC team.
• You carry out installations and configurations for various types of software and set up software deployment processes.
• You configure, optimise and develop job processing, prioritisation (e.g. SLURM), load balancing (e.g. Ballast) and monitoring (e.g. CheckMK).
• You actively contribute to user support, online documentation and course offerings.
• You independently implement the UDE IT security policy on the systems you are responsible for.

• Sie arbeiten selbstständig an Administration und Wartung von Software und Hardware der HPC-orientierten Cluster-Computersystemen (CPU, GPU), sowie allgemeinen Linux-Serversystemen zusammen mit dem HPC-Team.
• Sie führen Installationen und Konfigurationen für Software verschiedener Art durch und richten Software-Deployment-Prozesse ein.
• Sie konfigurieren, optimieren und entwickeln die Jobverarbeitung, Priorisierung (z.B. SLURM), Lastverteilung (z.B. Ballast) und das Monitoring (z.B. CheckMK).
• Sie tragen aktiv zum Benutzersupport, zur Online-Dokumentation und Kurs-Angeboten bei.
• Sie setzen selbstständig die IT-Sicherheitsrichtlinie der UDE auf den von Ihnen betreuten Systemen um.

Your profile

• You have completed training as an IT specialist and have several years of proven, relevant experience in the field of Linux server administration or a Bachelor's degree in computer science, mathematics or a related scientific or technical subject.
• You have very good knowledge of Linux, especially in the area of installation and administration of systems as well as the administration of access rights and directory services.
• You have good knowledge of shell and scripting languages (e.g. Python, Bash, etc.).
• You have an independent way of working, strong team spirit and enthusiasm for new challenges.
• You have a friendly demeanour, a service and solution-oriented way of thinking and acting as well as a high degree of flexibility and reliability.
• You have a high level of willingness and interest in familiarising yourself with new subject areas.
• You have strong communication skills and good written and spoken German skills (German B2) as well as industry-standard English skills.

In addition, the following experience is desirable:

• Experience in HPC cluster administration Knowledge of high-speed networking technologies (e.g. InfiniBand, Intel OmniPath) and massively parallel storage infrastructure (e.g. Lustre) Knowledge of configuration management systems (e.g. Ansible, xCAT).
• Knowledge of monitoring (e.g. CheckMK, ClusterCockpit).
• Experience in hardware-related system administration.

• Sie haben eine abgeschlossene Ausbildung zum/zur Fachinformatiker*in und nachgewiesene, mehrjährige einschlägige Erfahrung im Bereich der Linux-Serveradministration oder einen Bachelorabschluss in Informatik, Mathematik oder einem verwandten naturwissenschaftlichen oder technischen Fach.
• Sie verfügen über sehr gute Kenntnisse von Linux, insbesondere im Bereich der Installation und Administration von Systemen sowie der Verwaltung von Zugriffsrechten und Verzeichnisdiensten.
• Sie haben gute Kenntnisse in Shell- und Skriptsprachen (z.B. Python, Bash, etc.).
• Sie verfügen über eine selbstständige Arbeitsweise, ausgeprägte Teamfähigkeit und die Begeisterung für neue Herausforderungen.
• Sie haben ein freundliches Auftreten, dienstleistungs- und lösungsorientiertes Denken und Handeln sowie ein hohes Maß an Flexibilität und Zuverlässigkeit.
• Sie haben eine hohe Bereitschaft und Interesse sich in neue Themenfelder einzuarbeiten.
• Sie verfügen über Kommunikationsstärke und gute Deutschkenntnisse in Wort und Schrift (Deutsch B2) sowie branchenübliche Englischkenntnisse.

Darüber hinaus sind folgende Erfahrungen wünschenswert:
