Tao Liu started studying sociology in 1998 at the University of Bielefeld. In Mai 2005 he graduated from Bielefeld University as Diplomsoziologe. Afterwards he did a doctoral study on introduction of statutory accident insurance in China from the angle of policy diffusion. Between 2011 and 2014, Tao Liu was researcher in the FLOOR research project Social Cash Transfers – The Global Construction and Diffusion of the Right to a Monetary Minimum. His research areas included the development of the social cash transfer in both rural and urban areas of China, the diffusion of the policy ideas in social cash transfer, and the new social pension system in rural areas of China. As a junior professor at the IN-EAST his current research plan is focused on work accidents insurance, occupational safety and labour protection in China and Western Europe.
