The German Cancer Award 2023 in the category "Experimental Research" goes to Prof. Dr. Christian Reinhardt, researcher at the UDE Medical Faculty. His research focuses on genome stability and the biology of aggressive lymphomas also called "lymphoma". Professor Reinhardt is director of the Department of Hematology and Stem Cell Transplantation at the University Hospital Essen.

Through his basic research into the signal transduction processes of the DNA damage response, Reinhardt has contributed to a better understanding of cancer and the development of new treatment options, the jury's statement said.

In addition, the Essen-based cancer expert has described a new syndrome, the UBQLN4 syndrome, and elucidated its genetics. His data show that increased production of the protein UBQLN4 in tumors contributes to a higher mutation frequency. In addition, his research has led to preclinical and clinical studies on the efficacy of drug therapies for patients with relapsed and refractory chronic lymphocytic leukemia. With his move to Essen, a new research focus rests on the biology of aggressive lymphomas, for which he and his team are developing new, genetically triggered therapeutic options.

The German Cancer Prize of the German Cancer Society and the German Cancer Foundation is one of the highest awards in oncology and is endowed with 7,500 euros. The prize will be awarded on June 2 in Berlin. It is awarded annually in the categories "Clinical Research", "Translational Research" and "Experimental Research".
