IN-EAST presents the film Purpose
Redefining Prosperity
- 26.11.2024
Our economic system is often considered a contributing factor to the world’s numerous crises, as it is based on consumption and permanent growth. The German documentary Purpose follows two people who advocate for alternative economic models. The Institute for East Asian Studies (IN-EAST) at the University of Duisburg-Essen will screen the film on Monday, December 2, at 7 p.m. in room LX 1203 on the Duisburg campus. Producer and director Martin Oetting will be present.
In his film, Oetting portrays Lorenzo Fioramonti and Katherine Trebeck. As Italian Minister of Education and Research, Professor Fioramonti advocated the wellbeing economy in 2018 and 2019. This approach also measures the well-being of citizens and the protection of the environment, instead of focusing primarily on gross domestic product. Trebeck is a political economist who was instrumental in establishing the “Wellbeing Economy Governments” in 2018. The alliance aims to promote a holistic view of economic goals in its member countries – Scotland, New Zealand, Canada, Iceland, Wales and Finland – by including health, education, social justice and environmental sustainability.
Purpose has just celebrated its German premiere. Thanks to IN-EAST professor Axel Klein, the 96-minute documentary will now be shown at the UDE (English version). Director and producer Martin Oetting will discuss the film with the audience after the screening. Admission is free and registration is not required.
