Expanding strategic university cooperation x
Visit to the University of Cape Coast, Ghana
- 11.02.2025
Vice-Rector Prof. Karen Shire (Ph.D.) travelled to the University of Cape Coast in Ghana for an official visit from 3 to 7 February. She was accompanied by Dr Beatrice Asenso Barnieh, Director of the Ghana-NRW University Alliance Office in Accra.
The University of Cape Coast is one of the most traditional and renowned universities in Ghana. It was founded after the country's independence by Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana's first president, and is internationally recognised for its excellent research performance. According to Times Higher Education, the University of Cape Coast (UCC) ranks first among Ghanaian universities, first in West Africa and seventh on the entire African continent.
The aim of the visit was to explore cooperation between UDE and UCC and to establish contacts. Prof. Shire met with the Dean, Vice-Dean and staff of the International Relations Office, the Vice-Dean of Medical Sciences, the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, colleagues in the School of Education and Business Faculty and the Director of the Centre for Gender Research, Advocacy and Documentation (CEGRAD).
As a founding member of the Ghana-NRW University Alliance, UDE aims to further intensify its partnership with Ghanaian universities. In September 2024, a UDE delegation visited the University of Ghana in Accra, with which a Memorandum of Understanding has been in place since December 2024. Cooperation was also intensified with the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi, which is already involved in a joint project with the UDE's Centre for Water and Environmental Research.
In February, Vice-Rector Shire also further planned the cooperation with the University of Ghana with members of the International Offices as well as the presence of the UDE in Ghana and West Africa with the DAAD Regional Office in Ghana.
With the trip to Cape Coast, the UDE is expanding its cooperation with outstanding universities in Ghana and is now in close contact with three universities in the country.
