A Pathway to British Citizenship: A Corpus-Assisted Discourse Study of The Guardian's Representation of Hong Kong Migrants

This talk presents the preliminary findings of a corpus-assisted discourse study (CADS) examining The Guardian's portrayal of Hong Kong migrants to the UK from August 2019 to June 2024. Analyzing 144 articles with over 119,000 word tokens reveals key themes in media representation. The study employs the Discourse-Historical Approach by Reisigl and Wodak (2001) and van Leeuwen's (2008) Social Action Network. From a postcolonial perspective, the analysis will focus on how The Guardian backgrounds the fact that British colonial involvement in Hong Kong is a root cause of current political instability and the exodus.
