Photoelektronen-Spektroskopie
Was bietet die Photoelektronenspektroskopie?
Mit Hilfe der Photoelektronenspektroskopie ist es möglich die chemische Zusammensetzung einer Oberfläche zu bestimmen. Sowohl eine Unterscheidung verschiedener Elemente, aber auch die genau Beschreibung des Bindungszustandes eines Elements ist möglich.
Die Methode basiert auf der Detektion von Photoelektronen, die durch elektromagnetische Strahlung aus der zu untersuchenden Oberfläche ausgelöst werden. Üblicherweise unterscheidet man zwischen der Röntgenphotoelektronenspektroskopie (XPS), bei der Röntgenstrahlen mit einer kinetischen Energie im Bereich von etwa 1000 eV auf die Oberfläche geschossen werden, und der Ultraviolettphotoelektronenspektroskopie (UPS), bei der die Energie des verwendeten Lichtes im Bereich von wenigen 10 eV liegt.
Das ICAN nutzt primär die Versaprobe IITM der Firma Ulvac-Phi. Dieses Gerät bietet eine räumliche Auflösung für XPS-Messungen von 10 µm bei einer energetischen Auflösung von 0.5 eV. Die Detektion der durch die Röntgenstrahlung induzierten Sekundärelektronen (SXI) ermöglicht die direkte Abbildung der zu untersuchenden Oberfläche im µm Maßstab.

Die Energie des Photons wird dabei in kinetische Energie des Elektrons umgewandelt. Ist die Energie des Lichtes bekannt, kann man die Bindungsenergie des Elektrons bestimmen, indem man seine kinetische Energie bestimmt.
