The UDE in the European Green Capital
Green up your life!
In the history of the European Green Capital, the city of Essen is the first mining industry city that won the award 'European Green Capital'. The city's successful transformation process from a coal and steel city to the greenest urban area in North Rhine-Westphalia, shall, according to the organizer, be a role model for many European cities, which are facing structural changes.*
For the first time, there has been achieved a strong integration of the local university. When it comes to the European Green Capital, the University of Duisburg-Essen offers a wide program range and allows a scientific focus on the topics of the European Green Capital.
This is true in the sense that topics as sustainable mobility, water economics, open green space, sustainable consumerism, and recycling are those, which Essen fosters to especially pay attention to. At the same time, those are action fields, on which the University of Duisburg-Essen also focuses in the year of the European Green Capital: In science, education, and well-networked via public projects and events.
