IN-EAST is engaged in discipline-based area studies, applying sociological, political and economic theories and research perspectives to East Asia and its constituent countries and combining these approaches in cross-cutting interdisciplinary projects. The Institute aims to contribute to the understanding of developments in the contemporary societies of East Asia, their international relations and their growing impact in the world.

The unifying theoretical aim of IN-EAST’s research programs is to contribute to the ‘new institutionalism’ in economics, politics and sociology from an East Asian perspective.

Das IN-EAST kombiniert disziplinbasierte Regionalstudien unter Anwendung von soziologischen, politischen und ökonomischen Theorien mit regional- und länderbezogenen Forschungsperspektiven zu Ostasien und vereint diese Ansätze in interdisziplinären Projekten. Es leistet einen Beitrag zum Verständnis von Entwicklungen in den modernen Gesellschaften Ostasiens, ihrer internationalen Beziehungen und globalen Bedeutung.

Die Gemeinsamkeit der Forschungsprogramme am IN-EAST ist der Theoriebeitrag einer ostasiatischen Perspektive zum „Neoinstitutionalismus“ in Wirtschaft, Politik und Soziologie.
