LeanDeR – LNG

Construction of a multimodal usable LNG infrastructure as a lighthouse project at the port of Duisburg

LeanDeR is a joint project between the industrial partners Duisburger Hafen AG and RWE Supply & Trading as well as a partner of science, the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE).

In the joint LeanDeR project, a holistic and sustainable LNG logistics concept is being developed over several planning stages and tested and evaluated in the port of Duisburg under practical conditions in demonstration operation. With its multimodal concept, the project lays the foundation for sustainable mobility at the lighthouse location Duisburger Hafen.

The core of the project is the operation of a multimodal mobile LNG facility as well as the conversion and demonstration of two port handling equipment. In the demonstration project, a strong focus will be placed on the research and development of LNG technology, which should permanently increase the level of knowledge about the use of LNG in industry. In this context, the test operation of port handling equipment is carried out under real conditions. The units are researched, tested and optimized in dual-fuel (diesel / LNG) and pure LNG operation. The results obtained will be exploited and disseminated to develop a long-term business model for LNG fuel use.

The innovative LNG infrastructure project of Duisburger Hafen AG, RWE Supply & Trading GmbH and the University of Duisburg-Essen receives a grant of 740,000 euros from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

In the joint project, the LNG infrastructure at Duisburg harbor will be provided by RWEST GmbH. This is used to refuel the demonstrators, which are being converted by the management of Duisburger Hafen AG. This is a reachstacker, which is used in dual-fuel operation and a terminal tractor, which is used in pure LNG operation. The port vehicles are equipped by the University of Duisburg-Essen with appropriate measuring equipment, then monitored in daily operation and the results subsequently evaluated scientifically. The technologies of the demonstrators are tested, evaluated and optimized in close cooperation with all partners in the field. The development of two practical guides is led by the RWEST GmbH and has in addition the development of an environmental report from obtained measuring results to the object. The operation and refueling of port equipment by a mobile LNG facility is documented in a guideline, while another guideline outlines results on the LNG operation of terminal vehicles.
