Data management plan
What is a data management plan (DMP)?
A data management plan (DMP) is an important tool for structuring the handling of research data. DMPs can serve both as checklists and as a basis for continuous documentation: from data collection to long-term storage or publication. An increasing number of research sponsors, e.g. the EU or the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, are including DMPs in their list of requirements.
What information does a DMP include?
A DMP specifies how the generated research data is handled in a structured manner. This includes, among other things, the definition of responsibilities, existing rights and obligations, and information on procedures and aspects of storage and archiving.
Advantages:
- Facilitates arrangements regarding the exchange of data
- Facilitates documentation if reporting obligations apply
- Facilitates the subsequent use of your data
- Reduces the risk of data loss
German Research Foundation (DFG)
The DFG offers a checklist (structured as a questionnaire) that provides an overview of which information on research data management should be considered when submitting an application.
The completion guide created by Research Data Services for this checklist provides more detailed information and examples for each section. Feel free to continue to contact us with any questions.
