Flat hot rolling of steels
Free spreading occurs during flat rolling. In order to estimate the material flow, models have been developed at our department which allow an accurate prediction of the spreading.
Three-high mill with box pass design
From an initial cross-section of 50 - 55 mm square, we can roll a finished cross-section of 10 mm thickness and 60 mm width in 10 passes on our three-high mill.
Ceramic work rolls in a 20-high cluster mill
As part of a research project, we have tested the use of ceramic rolls as work rolls in a Sendzimir cluster mill. Here, two small work rolls are supported by a system of 18 back-up rolls to avoid severe elastic roll deformations. The small roll diameters (here 30 mm) increase the efficiency of the forming process.
FEM Simulation of the rolling process of a crane rail section
We investigate the material flow, or as shown here, the temperature distribution in rolls and rolled stock during the rolling of complicated special sections using numerical and elementary calculation methods.
Our goal is to develop fast computational models that support the pass designer in his work.

We are a young and dedicated team. We are united by a common passion for the forming of metallic materials.
What we teach Teaching
Our teaching portfolio consists of metal forming fundamentals, as well as technological topics of the forming of flat and long products. Another focus is on the theoretical fundamentals of plasticity, as well as English-language courses on design theory. In addition, we offer courses on metallurgy and materials science as well as materials testing.
As a special feature, we teach roll pass design for long products.
What we think about Research Activities
Our work focuses on the research and further development of forming processes, primarily rolling processes. In addition, we are also active in the description and modeling of the behavior of metallic materials during forming.
