Internet Access via eduroam (Education Roaming)
How to use eduroam?
Eduroam can be used on all current Windows systems, on Mac, Linux and on smartphones (iPhone, Android).
The only requirement is, that the operating system supports the authentication method EAP-TTLS-MSCHAPV2 or EAP-PEAP-MSCHAPV2. PAP is no longer supported as an inner authentication method because of security reasons.
For an automatic and secure configuration we recommend using the easy to use eduroam-CAT tool. On the CAT website, choose University Duisburg-Essen as your home organization.
Exception: Android is easier to configure when you install the eduroam CAT tool directly from the Play Store or configure eduroam manually on your Android device.
You can find more detailed instructions on how to manually configure eduroam here.
What is eduroam?
eduroam is a European initiative, that enables university students and employees to not only connect to the Wi-Fi of your own university, but also when visiting other participating schools/organizations (e.g. during a conference).
Almost all European countries are part of the initiative and more and more universities are following. Even outside of Europe, there are supporters in the Asian-Pacific area.
The local access authentication technology is IEEE 802.1X. This ensures that user data and passwords are encrypted during the whole transmission process to your home organization.
Advantages of eduroam
- Members of UDE receive easy access to the Wi-Fi.
- Members of participating organizations have the option to use the Wi-Fi at UDE without needing additional registrations or user clearances.
- The other way around, members of UDE can access the internet via Wi-Fi at other participating organizations. All they need is their student-ID (Unikennung).
You can see which organizations are already participating at eduroam on the current overview (see links on the right hand side).
Information on the certificate change for eduroamNo Wi-Fi with your old configuration!
On 05/31/2019 the certificate has been changed, which is needed for a secure Wi-Fi connection at UDE.
That is why devices, which were configured before 05/31/2019, have to be configured anew. Otherwise a connection will not be possible. However, you can still change your configuration at any time in the future.
You can find information on this under Information on the eduroam certificate change.
