Training Program

The training program is, next to the research program, a main part of each (post)doctoral research project and is managed directly within the WGS. It offers a comprehensive program to prepare the (post)doctoral researchers for their future career in academia, water industry or public services. This is achieved through colloquia, doctoral seminars, summer schools (for doctoral researchers only, postdocs can participate on individual notice) and annual retreats (for doctoral researchers only, postdocs can participate on individual notice). Further, various workshops and lectures (partly out of the existing water curricula) are organized by the WGS and open for all members. The training program also includes outreach activities  (public engagement activities) and can be expanded by each (post)doctoral researchers though an individual training.

There are official requirements by each faculty which have to be fulfilled by each doctoral researcher in order to graduate. These, requirements are fulfilled if the doctoral researcher performs in the offered training program. The WGS is on the list of accredited doctoral programs of the Faculty of Biology.

Outreach activities  (public engagement activities) are not directly organized by the WGS but options are offered to the doctoral researchers. Further, outreach activities can also be organized by each doctoral researcher themselves but need to be accepted by the WGS. Individual training, e.g. additional workshops, has to be confirmed by a certificate and accepted by the WGS.

Individual Training

Each member of the WGS can also participate in workshops outside of the offered program. These can be either chosen directly by the WGS members or the interested topic can be mentioned to Dr. Vanessa Kramer (vanessa.kramer@uni-due.de) and will be organized for the whole WGS.

Colloquia

Once per month a colloquium takes place in which the (post)doctoral researchers present their research project. Additionally, an external (mostly the non-academic mentor) or internal speaker is invited to each colloquium to present their work inside and outside of academia.

The aim of the colloquia is to support the fundamental understanding of the cross‑sectoral topics of the WGS and to allow the (post)doctoral researchers to get an insight into research topics and methodology outside of their own research project. These colloquia will also facilitate interdisciplinary collaborations and the exchange of experimental and data analysis methods. Further, the (post-)doctoral researchers get an insight of the academic and non-academic working opportunities and the network of each (post)doctoral researcher can be extended.

All (post)doctoral researchers have to present their work at least once in the colloquium throughout their membership in the WGS.

The colloquium is open for everyone interested in the WGS or the performed research. It takes place every third Wednesday of the month at 4 pm.

The next colloquia will take place in the winter semester 2024/2025.

Summer schools

The summer school is organized once a year and takes place for 5-days and contains a research program with different topics. Further, each summer school includes a workshop as well as site visits and field trips or other team building activities.

So far, no summer schools have been performed by the WGS but only the IRTG CRC RESIST 1439.

Outreach activities

To present the performed research within the WGS to the public so-called outreach activities will be organized within the WGS. These include all activities in which the research is presented to people outside of the scientific field such as the summer festival, open-door day, presentations in schools, etc. and the presented program will be organized and designed by the doctoral researchers and postdocs themselves.

So far, no outreach activities have been performed by the WGS but only the IRTG CRC RESIST 1439.
