Reaching Essen:

Essen can be reached via regional and long distance bus and train (to Essen Hbf / Hauptbahnhof / main train station) connections.

The closest airports are Düsseldorf (DUS, attention: Düsseldorf-Weeze (NRN) might be more difficult to reach!), Cologne-Bonn (CGN), and Dortmund (DTM), but convenient direct fast train connections are also available e.g. from Frankfurt (FRA, attention: Frankfurt-Hahn (HHN) might be more difficult to reach!).

In Essen, if you would like to reach the conference hotel:

From Essen Hbf / Hauptbahnhof / main train station:

If you prefer to walk (550 m/0.3 mile, 5 min):

please exit the main station to the North (towards downtown Essen pedestrian area, the exit is located between a fast food restaurant and a grocery store), cross the street at the traffic lights and continue straight along the main pedestrian street Kettwiger Straße until you reach Essen Cathedral / Dom Essen on your right. Turn left (between two stores selling clothes) and continue for one block, Motel One is located on your left hand side.

If you prefer public transportation:

The underground tram stop is located at the Southern exit of Essen main station. Your preferred stop for Motel One is Hirschlandplatz (1 stop, U11 Altenessen - Essen Karnap - GE-Buerer Straße, U17 Karlsplatz, U18 Berliner Platz). Use exit B, turn right for 1 block, then turn left for another block, and Motel One is on your right hand side.

If you prefer using a taxi:

Taxis are located on the right hand side of the Northern exit (between a fast food restaurant and a grocery store). A taxi from Essen main train station to the conference hotel costs roughly 6-8 € during daytime, depending on traffic, the ride takes about 6 minutes.

In Essen, if you would like to reach the university/conference venue:

The hosts' offices as well as our meeting room on campus (R12 R04 B02) are in the red building at Universitätsstraße 12, 45141 Essen.

You may also want to consider walking to the university (1 km/0.6 mile from the conference hotel): just follow the main pedestrian street Kettwiger Straße to the North to Rheinischer Platz, continue straight through the tram station or across the traffic lights and follow Gladbecker Straße until you reach our building, R12. Our building is located on your left hand side. In total, it is a 10-15 min walk from the main train station Essen Hbf / Hauptbahnhof (2 underground tram stops, 1.5 km/1 mile) and a 5-10 min walk (1 underground tram stop, 1 km/0.6 mile) from the conference hotel (underground tram stop: Rathaus).

If you prefer using a bike:

There are bike rentals e.g. at the main train station (e.g. Radstation or metropolrad ruhr) or at different locations (e.g. metropolrad ruhr) throughout Essen, including our campus. Please bear in mind though that cycling along the pedestrian street can be difficult during times of higher pedestrian density (between later mornings and evenings).

If you prefer using a taxi:

A taxi costs roughly between 9.50-12 € for a daytime ride between our building at the university and the conference hotel as well as Essen main station, the ride takes about 8 minutes (depending on traffic).

You may use trams 103 Essen Wertstr., 105 Essen Unterstr., 106 Essen Germaniaplatz or 109 Frohnhausen Breilsort (underground tram stops #1 or #3, 1 stop to Rheinischer Platz) or bus 196 Essen Hafenverwaltung / Bergeborbeck - Vogelheim (Bus Stop #2, 2 stops to Universitätsstraße) from Rathaus (bus and underground tram stop, located next (bus) and inside (underground tram) Rathaus Galerie). Rathaus Galerie is a shopping center: From Motel One, you walk 1 block to Essen Cathedral, turn left and follow the main pedestrian street for 2 blocks, then turn right. You can use a short distance (K / Kurzstrecke) ticket (1.60 € for individual tickets, 5.90 € for 4-ride ticket): no more than 3 stops on one specific means of public transportation (no change of lines, between e.g. bus and tram, ...).

Your preferred underground tram stop at the uni is Rheinischer Platz, which is located right below the map above on the lower right hand corner. From there, please follow Gladbecker Straße straight to our building. From downtown locations including Essen main station, you may be able to use a short distance (K / Kurzstrecke) ticket (1.60 € for individual tickets, 5.90 € for 4-ride ticket): no more than 3 stops on one specific means of public transportation (no change of lines, between e.g. bus and tram, ...).

If you prefer using a bus from Essen main station to the uni:

Please exit the station via the Northern exit (between a fast food restaurant and a grocery store), turn left to bus stop #1 and use bus 196 towards Essen Hafenstraße / Bergeborbeck - Vogelheim. After 4 stops you will reach the stop Universitätsstraße which is included on the right hand side of the map above. Please note that this trip is one stop too long for a short distance ticket, you will need an A3 ticket (2.80 € for single, 10.20 € for a 4-trip-ticket).

 

Finding us inside the building:

Inside the red building R12 (the entrance can be found in the corner between the cafeteria Cafe Rosso on your right and a large meeting room with many windows ("glas pavillon") on your left), please take any stairs or the blue or green elevator to the fourth floor. The room can be found in the hallway with the red door between the blue and red elevator, labelled "B," and the room is located on your right. We will put up signs for your orientation as well.​
