The open-topic program offers talented postdocs the opportunity to establish a Max Planck research group at an MPI. After the doctorate, a stay abroad is offered, followed by a position as head of a working group. The group leaders are free to shape their own scientific research and can conduct it on their own responsibility and with their own budget - embedded in the extremely stimulating research life of an MPI. The contracts have a regular term of five years, with renewal options often available. Tenure-track positions can also be offered at some MPIs.
