Essener College of Gender Research
Conditions of constitution - inequalities - difference
The Essener College of Gender Research was conceived as a central research institution of the university and opened in January 1998. Academically, the research group follows the tradition of gender research and makes use of the paradigms and results developed over the past 30 years. It represents an approach in which women's and men's studies are not thought of as a mere addition, but rather emphasizes the gender relationship. The focus here is on the constitutive conditions of gender, inequalities between the sexes and differences within gender groups.
German Society for Gender-Specific Medicine e.V.
In biomedical research and clinical medicine, the relevance of assessing the dimensions of sex, biological (“sex”) and sociocultural (“gender”) is recognized. Gender-sensitive personalized medicine (GSM+ medicine) takes other diversity factors such as age, origin, religious affiliation, sexual identity, physical and psychological characteristics into account in addition to gender dimensions.
These influencing factors must be taken into account in relation to the issues surrounding the development of health and illness at a social and individual level.
The aim of GSM+ research and medicine is to develop individual preventive measures that lead to healthy ageing and an increase in the quality of medical care for the population.
With the introduction of medical universities in the 18th century, women were historically neglected in the health sciences and people who identify as non-binary, trans* or inter* were largely ignored. The task of GSM+ research and medicine is to close this data gap (gender data gap).
