The following focal points, which are regionally and nationally relevant to society and education policy, are currently in the focus of research and teaching:

•     Acquisition and teaching of German as a second and foreign language at home and abroad
•     Multilingual language acquisition
•     Professionalisation of teachers of all subjects for dealing with German as a second language and multilingualism in all phases of teacher education
•     Language education and aesthetic-cultural learning (including through art, fairy tales and drama pedagogical methods)
•     Participation-oriented concepts for new immigrants
•     Development of further education and training
•     Intercultural communication
