Open Access Funding

You publish - we support you!

In addition to the regular literature funds, the UL manages a DFG-funded publication fund.
The aim is to support authors by paying publication fees (e.g. Article Processing Charges: APCs) for Open Access publications (journals, monographs and collective works).

Requirements for funding

Who can apply for funding?

  • You are a member of the University of Duisburg-Essen and a corresponding author responsible for the payment of article processing charges (APCs) in an open access journal
  • UDE students can apply for article funding if a member of the supervising faculty supports or approves the publication of the paper. In these cases, funding is only granted upon application and is decided on a case-by-case basis
  • The University of Duisburg-Essen or the University Hospital must be specified as the first affiliation

In which Open Access journals can you publish?

  • The article must appear in a journal whose articles are accessible to users free of charge via the Internet immediately upon publication
  • The journal must be a "genuine open access journal" that is listed in the Directory of Open Access Journals and that applies recognised, strict quality assurance procedures in the respective subject area
  • Articles in so-called hybrid journals - subscription-based journals with open access options - and in mirror journals cannot be funded
  • Information on the assumption of publication fees in hybrid journals of individual publishers within the framework of transformation agreements can be found in the publisher-specific funding options
  • Please also note the information on dubious publishers, so-called predatory publishing

Would you like to publish a conference paper?

  • Please note that contributions to hybrid conference proceedings are not funded.
  • Please contact the Open Access team by e-mail for information on the assumption of costs for a Gold OA report

Costs

  • Pro-rata funding up to a maximum amount of €2000, including VAT, is possible via the Publication Fund.
  • Use this application form to apply for publication costs (full and partial funding)
  • You can also use it to apply for billing via your cost centre/PSP element/third-party funding account (e.g. for hybrid articles and articles from journals not eligible for funding)
  • For the time being, invoices from the Faculty of Medicine are excluded here. For publication fees over €2,000, you can apply for reimbursement of up to a maximum of €2,000 of the fees via the application form after paying the invoice

Invoice

  • Please upload the invoice and any other documents in the application form
  • VAT-ID must not be shown on an invoice from abroad, the publisher may require the VAT ID of the UDE: DE 811 272 995

CC licences

  • We recommend the use of the Creative Commons licence CC BY, which provides the greatest possibility of re-use for your work. The less restrictive Creative Commons licences CC BY or CC BY-SA are also recommended in the UDE Open Access Policy
  • Further information on the CC licences can be found here

Acknowledgements

  • The articles must contain a reference to the funding (e.g. "We acknowledge support by the Open Access Publication Fund of the University of Duisburg-Essen.")

Funding of monographs

The following guidelines apply to funding monographs or collective works from the Open Access Monographs Publication Fund:

Members of the UDE are eligible for funding as authors or editors .

Scope of funding

  • The funding amount per publication is 4,500 € (gross).
In the event of higher expenditure due to page size, a large number of illustrations and tables or high costs for image rights or licenses, this sum can be increased to a maximum of 6,000 € (gross).
  • Only costs for a genuine open-access publication will be funded; costs for a simultaneous print edition will not be funded.
  • Pro rata funding is possible.
  • The funding is limited to one publication per author per funding year.
  • A commitment for funding can only be guaranteed for a period of up to 12 months in order not to commit funds too long-term.

Quality assurance

  • Quality assurance must be granted (e.g. through peer review, peer reviewers, editors, scientific editing, etc.).
This is common for publishers listed in the Directory of Open Access Books (DOAB).

Legal information

  • A sample contract for an OA monograph can be created with the AuROA contract generator. It can be customised and negotiated with your publisher. Its text adheres to German copyright law.
  • The publication is made under an Open Access compliant license, a CC-BY license is recommended. In addition, the publications receive Persistent Identifiers, i.e. a DOI or URN.
  • The rights to illustrations and other third party material have been clarified.
  • Long-term archiving must be guaranteed (e.g. via the German National Library)

Legal notice / Imprint

  • Information on Open Access and the CC license is clearly contained in the imprint of the online and print editions.
  • Upon publication, the publications (print and online editions) contain a note that they were funded by the UDE publication fund.

The funded publications are made available on the UDE document server DuEPublico.

Please enter your data on the publication for which you would like to apply for funding in the form.
You are welcome to contact us in advance by phone or e-mail for advice.
