Prof. Dr. Jochen Gönsch | Service Operations
Personal Details
Professor Gönsch studied Business Administration with Computer Science at the TU Darmstadt. He received his Ph.D. in Business Administration from the University of Augsburg in 2010 with a thesis on pricing and revenue management under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Robert Klein. He earned his Habilitation (postdoctoral lecturer qualification) from the same university in 2015. The same year he became full professor at the University Duisburg-Essen, where he holds the chair of Service Operations. Professor Gönsch has received several awards, including the Logistics Science Award of the German logistics association (BVL).
Teaching
Planning and Managing Service Operations requires deep analytical skills to solve complex problems in an adequate way. Accordingly, the chair offers lectures with a focus on methods as well as with a focus on applications in mobility, logistics and closed-loop supply chains. Learning outcomes are motivated through their relevance for practice and research. Most important, students are nudged to actively participate to ensure sustainable learning.
Research
The research focus of Professor Gönsch addresses economically and socially relevant issues from the service sector (see research topics) using quantitative methods. The developed models and methods focus the interface between suppliers and customers. Collaborations with partners allow new perspectives and provide valuable insights. Through the abstraction of the problem and its feedback with practice, the research question becomes relevant beyond the individual case. In light of the literature, appropriate optimization models are designed and examined regarding their theoretical properties and suitability for practical use.
An emphasis is on problems from the following fields:
- Mobility and Logistics
- Remanufacturing
- Renewable Energy
- Revenue Management and Pricing
- Risk-Aversion
Professor Gönsch has published his results in various peer-reviewed journals like European Journal of Operational Research, OR Spectrum and Transportation Science. Furthermore, he has authored several publications disseminating research to students and practitioners. He is the co-founder of the working group “Analytics” of the German national OR society (GOR) and he frequently organizes streams and sessions on international conferences. Professor Gönsch cooperated with companies like Daimler, IBM, Lufthansa and Sixt.
