Prof. Dr. Hans-Dieter Kochs | Information Logistics
Personal Details
Professor Kochs studied and received his Ph.D. at the RWTH Aachen. During his study he was Cusanus Scholar. He worked in senior positions in AEG/Daimler, Frankfurt and Seligenstadt, FAG-Kugelfischer, Erlangen and ESWE, Wiesbaden. In 1991 he was appointed as a full professor at the University of Duisburg-Essen to hold the chair of Information Logistics. His main working areas are high reliable systems for the monitoring and the control and automation of interactive processes, dependability of mechatronic systems, and algorithms for medical monitoring. Professor Kochs is a member of a large number of professional associations and committees. He is patentee of many patents and patents pending.
Teaching
Information Logistics aims to give the right information in the right form (in terms of quantity and quality), at the right place, at the right time, reliable, and at economically reasonable cost. Information logistics include essential units of (technical) information management, knowledge management and communication management. The courses fundamentals of the technical informatics, fundamentals of programming, object oriented software engineering, object oriented programming in C++, informatics and numerical methods, dependability in mechatronic systems, internet technology for engineers, reliability and security of digital systems provide a broad insight into many real-life logistics problems.
Research
Research at the Chair of information logistics focuses information systems at the interface to specific application areas of energy supply, mechatronics, and medical technology taking into account the interaction of humans. The goal of the chair is to gain, develop, integrate and combine scientific knowledge in these areas, and to use it in prototype applications. An emphasis is on problems from the following fields:
- Information Logistics
- Information Systems
- Energy Logistics
- Reliability of the mechatronic and Nano-Systems
The research projects are carried out in interdisciplinary research groups by computer scientists, electrical engineers and mechanical engineers in close cooperation with scientific institutions and industry. Selected recent research projects are:
- A Plant-Visualization-System for the maintenance crew of a steelworks company
- Development of a management and accounting system for Internet Service Providers
- Information System for Classification of Waste during waste disposal for industry and trade
- Conception of an integrated simulation based functional and software development for mechatronic systems in vehicles
- Least Cost Optimisation and Routing for grid bound energy acquisition
- Dependability modelling, similarity analysis and optimisation of mechatronic systems
- Knowledge-based signal analysis for anaesthesia monitoring
Professor Kochs has authored numerous scientific publications which appeared in refereed journals like Journal of Risk and Reliability, Reliability Engineering and System Safety, International Journal of Computers and Applications, Journal of Universal Computer Science, International Journal of Uncertainty, Fuzziness and Knowledge Based Systems, European Transactions on Electrical Power Engineering, EUFIT, Techniques and Soft Computing, and several others. His research is supported by the German Academic Exchange Agency (DAAD), the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the German Research Foundation (DFG) and some further institutions. Professor Kochs cooperated with companies like Thyssen-Krupp Stahl AG, Hüttenwerke Krupp Mannesmann, Robert Bosch GmbH, Radiometrie RM GmbH, ABB and others.
