New Visiting Doctoral Researcher at the IN-EAST

Brandon Takayuki Hillier is a visiting DAAD graduate student fellow at IN-EAST, from November 2023 to March 2024. He is currently a PhD student in the Department of Geography at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. A “post-disciplinary” social scientist, his work draws from diverse areas of social theory, political economy, and comparative institutional analysis. As part of his dissertation research, he will be empirically investigating the relationship between discourses of regional economic “decline” (in Germany, Japan, and the US) and the construction of labour markets. He has previously published on “smart cities,” the Japanese economic model, and regulation theory.
