South Korea’s April Revolution through the Lens of West Germany. In: Korea Journal, Vol. 60, No. 3, 09/2020, 118–150.
Germany’s interest in the peninsula became significantly stronger after World War II when as US protégés both countries were divided and became states at the frontlines of the new bipolar world order. Against this backdrop, this article explores how the 1960 April Revolution in South Korea was reflected in the contemporary West German press and Germany’s diplomatic corps. To that end, the paper investigates historical sources such as media reports, government-issued publications, and diplomatic cables retrieved from the Political Archive of the Federal Foreign Office.
