North Rhine-Westphalia and, especially, the Ruhr area is home to numerous offshore wind turbine companies. A considerable part of the turnover in the offshore wind industry is gained in North Rhine-Westphalia. Duisburg is also home of the largest inland waterway port in Europe.
The University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) is an ideal location to get prepared for the professional life of an engineer. The university’s versatile and challenging study program in mechanical engineering focuses on sustainable and autonomous maritime systems. The program begins with the seven-semester Bachelor's degree curriculum. Here, the basics of mechanical engineering are taught, including not only the essentials of mathematics and science and technology orientated subjects, but also the fundamental knowledge of the specialization in Sustainable and Autonomous Maritime Systems. At the end of the Bachelor's degree program, an authorized internship must be completed. This provides the prospective graduate with sufficient insight into working as a professional engineer and into the related production processes. With the degree "Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering," the graduate is directly qualified to enter their professional life. However, to deepen their knowledge and to acquire additional industry-specific expertise, it is advisable to follow up with a Master's degree. It is also possible to switch between different specializations of mechanical engineering. Focusing on the area of Sustainable and Autonomous Maritime Systems, it is requested to acquire knowledge and methods necessary for the development of maritime systems in the mechanical engineering context, specifically, in the fields of hydro- and aerodynamics, design, structural strength, and autonomous numerical and experimental methods. To expand their education and gain a greater international dimension, a graduate might want to enroll in the study profile "Sustainabe and Autonomous Maritime Systems" of the Master's degree program in Mechanical Engineering. This program is offered as part of the international English-language program “International Studies in Engineering (ISE).” Both courses are to be completed with a Master's thesis in order to achieve the title "Master of Science." Our graduates find lucrative jobs, among others, at mechanical engineering companies, suppliers to the offshore and shipbuilding industry, shipping companies, shipyards, and also at companies engaged in mechanical and aerospace engineering.

StudierendenschaftSupporting Students - Verein Duisburger Schiffbaustudenten e.V. und Tretbootteam
High-quality teaching is not the only way to successful studies, a good student community is also very important! This is why the shipbuilding students in Duisburg founded the “Metazentrum” back in 1954, which still exists today and is now organized in the Duisburger Schiffbaustudenten e. V. association.
This community offers every student help and support and provides joint activities and excursions, sporting activities and contacts with like-minded students throughout Europe. This includes the International Waterbike Regatta, which takes place annually at different locations.
