Soft Skills Summer 2019
The Soft Skills Summer is an initiative by the CRC 1242 and the team for Equal Opportunities of the Faculty of Physics at the University of Duisburg-Essen. We would like to invite you to be a part of it and to improve your soft skills.
We offer three workshops. It is possible to attend one, two or all workshops.
Friday, August 9, 2019 Voice & Public Speaking
Having a strong and convincing voice is not just a gift. It’s a question of practice and technique. Besides transmitting information, your voice is an instrument to inspire and to perform with confidence.
Topics of the workshop:
- Nonverbal communication & functionality of the voice
- Posture and the right breathing for your instrument
- Articulation, tone of voice, pace & pauses – variety is key
- Vocal care: Dos and Don’ts before a presentation
Friday, September 13, 2019 Networking for Scientists
Making the right contacts and taking care of them is not easy. However, building a network with experts, funders, colleagues and potential employers increases the chances to establish mutually beneficial relationships.
Topics of the workshop:
- Networking goals for scientists
- Personal needs for successful networking
- Relationship care: Give-and-take / Dos and Don’ts
- Structured planning: Who do I want to get to know, where, when and for what reason?
Friday, September 20, 2019 Organizing and Managing my Research team
Every research team has its own dynamic. Therefore, team leaders face different responsibilities and challenges. This workshop covers techniques, leadership roles and styles which can contribute to the success of cooperation within your research team.
Topics of the workshop:
- My leadership role and my personal style in leading
- Keeping my research team motivated
- Common goals and interim targets
- Setting clear priorities and clear up interfaces
