Children's & Youth Literature
The basic stock of an international collection on children's and young people's literature dates back to the time of the former Pädagogische Hochschule Essen and has been and is being continuously expanded.
The collection is located in the Humanities and Social Sciences Library on the Essen campus and comprises a total of approximately 8,000 children's books and picture books. The historically valuable and partly illustrated copies are kept in the stacks under special protection, the larger part is freely accessible at location E03 (1st floor, room A).
For several years, the UL has been continuously acquiring new literature on the topics of research and teaching, as well as award-winning works in German and in translation, in cooperation with the Chair of Literature Didactics of the German Department.
East Asian Studies
With generous support from the Peter Klöckner Foundation and the Japan Foundation, the UL has been building an "East Asian Studies" collection in the LK Library on the Duisburg campus for over 25 years.
The collection is oriented to the needs of the study programs of the Institute of East Asian Studies (IN-EAST). It includes nearly 28.000 titles, over 260 journals, and daily newspapers in Western languages and in the original languages.
Content includes economics, politics, society, international relations, geography, transportation, history, and culture and modern languages.
Turkish Literature
The UL's collection of Turkish Literature at the Essen campus includes more than 17.000 books, about 300 CDs and DVDs, and several current periodicals. It thus forms a focal point of Turkish-language literature in NRW.
The collection has been built up since the mid-1990s. The aim is to provide the subject of Turkish Studies with the necessary research and study literature.
Main content areas are:
- Linguistics and Literature of Turkish
- Didactics of modern Turkish
- Politics and history of modern Turkey as well as the Ottoman Empire
