Picturebook Collection of the EFL Education Department
Picturebooks hold in store an immense value for English language teaching, ranging from language-focused to content-oriented uses. Alongside primary ELT, picturebooks are becoming increasingly popular in secondary ELT, too. To address and explore the potential of picturebooks in both primary and secondary education, the EFL Education department provides a growing picturebook collection of more than 200 different titles. This way, students can access a vast variety of picturebooks for their study and teaching projects and for their BA or MA theses.
The collection places a thematic focus on topics such as social justice, mental health awareness, inclusion, and global challenges and includes, for example, books on racism (Something Happened in Our Town), diverse families (And Tango Makes Three or The Proudest Blue), and emotions (When Sadness Comes to Call). In addition, the collection comprises picturebooks with outstanding literary or language value (e.g., The Great Paper Caper, The Girl in Red, The Rabbits, or Mr Tiger Goes Wild), and of course some classics such as The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Froggy Gets Dressed, or The Pigeon Has to Go to School.
You can research the picturebook collection of the EFL Education department through the Semesterapparat of Prof. Wilden and Prof. Merse in the UDE library (Fachbibliothek GW/GSW, Campus Essen, Room A, Bookshelf 138) or online (https://semapp.uni-due.de/collection/view/7319 - Semesterapparat Merse / Wilden EFL Education, Nr. 138, login with student ID and the key password Didaktik).
How can you get hold of a picturebook? Each picturebook is offered twice: for internal use in the library via the Semesterapparat bookshelf, and for borrowing from the library stock via the regular Ausleihe. In addition, the EFL Education department keeps all of the picturebooks in their own collection for usage in courses and seminars.
