Prof. Dr. Bockisch
becomes a member of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina.
An offer that can hardly be refused: The renowned German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina has admitted Prof. Dr. Dr. Andreas Bockisch as a member. Since 1996, 61-year-old Prof. Bockisch has been the director of the Clinic for Nuclear Medicine at the University Hospital of the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) and has made a significant contribution to his subject – a prerequisite for becoming a member of the academy.
PD Dr. Frank-Joachim Meyer zu Heringdorf
receives the 2011 G.D. Baedeker Prize.
PD Dr. Frank-Joachim Meyer zu Heringsdorf, a physicist at the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE), has been awarded the Gottschalk-Diederich-Baedeker Prize worth 5,000 euros for his outstanding habilitation thesis. In it, he deals with various phenomena in surface physics, which he has examined using slow-electron microscopy (LEEM) and photoemission microscopy (PEEM). His masterstroke was to examine the dynamics of surface plasmons in silver nanostructures.
PD Dr. Matthias Wille
is awarded the Karl Arnold Prize.
PD Dr. Matthias Wille, a philosopher at the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE), is successfully examining which structures allow experience and the role that language plays in this. On 25 May at 1700, he will be presented with the Karl Arnold Research Prize for this work at the annual celebration of the North Rhine Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts. The prize is endowed with 10,000 euros and is awarded annually for outstanding work by a junior scientist.

has been accepted into the Leopoldina.
Prof. Dr. Erich Gulbins, director of the Institute of Molecular Biology (Cancer Research), has been elected a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina.
Prof. Dr. Albert W. Rettenmeier
receives the 2011 Franz Koelsch Medal
Prof. Dr. med. Dipl.-Chem Albert Wolfgang Rettenmeier, director of the Institute of Hygiene and Occupational Medicine at the University of Duisburg-Essen, has been awarded the Franz Koelsch Medal for his outstanding contributions to occupational medicine at the 51st Annual Meeting of the German Society for Occupational and Environmental Medicine (DGAUM).
Dr. Moritz Kerz
is awarded the 2011 Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Prize.
Mathematician Dr. Moritz Kerz (27) of the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) is one of six new recipients of the most important prize for young scientists in Germany, the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Prize. They were chosen by the selection committee of the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The prize will be awarded in Berlin on 9 May.
Prof. Dr. Michael Schreckenberg
appointed to the European Academy.
On 5 March in Salzburg, Prof. Dr. Michael Schreckenberg, traffic congestion researcher at the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE), will be inducted into the European Academy of Sciences and Arts. In doing so, EASA will be honouring Schreckenberg’s research contributions to theoretical physics, in particular to transport and traffic physics.
Prof. Dr. Markus Kaiser
receives the 2011 Research Prize of the Peter and Traudl Engelhorn Foundation.
After having recently been awarded a substantial grant from the European Research Council, Prof. Dr. Markus Kaiser of the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) has now received another award. The Peter and Traudl Engelhorn Foundation for the promotion of young scientists in biotechnology and genetic engineering has awarded the 35-year-old the 2011 Research Prize in recognition of his development of new lead compounds for drugs.
