From March 15-17, 2023, the DVPW Section Conference "Kämpfe um Diversität. Theorie an den Grenzen von Wissenschaft und Politik“ - „Struggles for Diversity. Theory at the Boundary of Science and Politics" took place at the Institute of Political Science, University of Duisburg-Essen, and was co-organised by Franziska Martinsen (Universität Duisburg-Essen), Peter Niesen (Universität Hamburg), Karsten Schubert (HU Berlin), Frieder Vogelmann (Universität Freiburg) und Sabrina Zucca-Soest (Helmut-Schmidt-Universität Hamburg).

Academic Career

Franziska Martinsen is Professor of Political Theory and currently Director at Institute of Political Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Duisburg-Essen, and Director of the Centre for Global Cooperation, inter-faculty research centre of the University of Duisburg-Essen.

She studied philosophy, musicology and political science at the Humboldt University in Berlin and obtained 2009 her doctorate in philosophy at the University of Basel (Switzerland). She completed her habilitation in political science at Leibniz University Hannover (2016). From 2003 to 2017, she worked as a research assistant at the Universities of Basel (Switzerland), Fribourg (Switzerland) and as a post doc at the Leibniz University Hannover. Since 2017, she has held visiting and deputy professorships at the universities of Greifswald, Kiel, Vienna, Berlin and Bremen and was a fellow at the Käte Hamburg Centre for Advanced Study in the Humanities Bonn ‘Law as Culture’ (2019/2020). From 2020-2022, she was a deputy professor of Political Theory at the University of Duisburg-Essen.

Her research focuses on political theory and the history of ideas as well as gender studies in political theory, in particular feminist, intersectional and postcolonial theories, theories of democracy and human rights and theories of justice. She has published on a wide range of topics relating to radical democratic theory, the critical expansion of human rights thinking, feminist political theory and gender studies in political science.
