Zur Person
Liina Mustonen received a PhD from the European University Institute in Florence in 2017. Before joining the department of sociology at the university Duisburg-Essen, she taught courses on gender, politics, and media with a focus on the Middle East at the University of Helsinki. She has been a visiting scholar at the Finnish Institute in the Middle East in Beirut, Margherita von Brentano Center at Freie Universität Berlin, the Instituto Universitario de Estudios de Género at Carlos III in Madrid, and the Center for Social Science Research in Cape Town.
Liina’s research and teaching focus on issues that lie at the intersection of social distinction, processes of othering, gender, and mobility. Her geographic focus is the wider Middle East. Between 2011 and 2014 she conducted ethnographic research for her doctoral dissertation in Cairo, studying social distinction and the politicization of gender during Egypt’s transitional period. In 2017 and 2018 she conducted fieldwork in Beirut. Her post-doctoral project explores the interplay of gender performativity and mobility in migration between Europe and the Middle East.
